Course Details

Practical Woodwork is a vocational course that aims to develop a range of practical skills through the planning and manufacturing of a number of craft models.

Topics and skills covered in the course include:

  • Health and safety – safe use of tools, equipment and machinery; basic tool maintenance; fault-finding and recording.
  • Planning for manufacture – reading drawings; preparing cutting lists; marking out.
  • Woodworking materials – softwoods, hardwoods and manufactured boards.
  • Flat frames – cross-halvings, T-halvings, dowel joints, mitres, bridles, mortise & tenons, dovetails halvings, etc.
  • Carcases – through housings, stopped housings, corner laps, dowel joints, etc.
  • Machining – drilling, sanding, lathes, etc.
  • Woodworking finishes – surface preparation; varnishes, oils, stains, paints and waxes.

National 4 is assessed by passing a series of units. Once units are completed, a final project must be completed to obtain a course “pass”.

National 5 is assessed by completing a project worth 70% of the final mark (55% for the model, 15% for a maintaining a log book). The remaining 30% is assessed by a written examination.

 

Expectations

  • Due to ever increasing material costs, pupils may be expected to make a financial contribution.
  • Meeting deadlines and being resilient are important features of being successful in this course – you will be expected to carry out tasks in your own time.
  • There is a theoretical aspect to this course – pupils should expect to be undertaking written work, and possibly homework where appropriate.
  • Health and safety is paramount – pupils unable to cooperate with health and safety instructions will be removed from class.

 

Progression Routes

There is no Higher level available in Practical Woodwork. To continue study in this area, the next step would be to move on to college to study a range of courses such as:

  • Construction
  • Furniture Making
  • Joinery
  • Other courses involving practical skills

Pupils moving on to S5/6 may be able to progress on to N4/5 Practical Metalwork or N4/5 Design & Manufacture.
