F1 in Schools

F1 in Schools is a STEM challenge that gives pupils the opportunity to work together to design, develop and manufacture a carbon dioxide powered racing car.

This STEM club is being run as a club in the D.E.T. (Design, Engineering & Technology) department, where pupils can work on their cars at lunchtimes or after school.

F1 in Schools is open to all pupils S1 to S6, girls and boys, of any ability through different classes of competition.

Although this is very much a technical engineering project, you do not have to be doing a D.E.T. subject to take part. Indeed, because there are team roles that do not require technical knowledge, you don’t even have to be interested in engineering or motor sport!

As part of the challenge, pupils must work as part of a team. Each team can have up to six members, performing roles such as:

  • Team Manager
  • Resources Manager
  • Manufacturing Engineer
  • Design Engineer
  • Graphic Designer

The aim of the team is not only to produce a car, but to:

  • arrange sponsorship
  • produce promotional material
  • make presentations
  • develop designs and ideas
  • investigate manufacturing techniques
  • produce computer models and technical drawings
  • test and evaluate performance against rules and specification

If teams are able to successfully produce cars to specification, and put together portfolios and presentations, then they will have the opportunity to enter the Scottish Regional Competition. If they perform well enough, they may be invited to take part at the British National Competition at Silverstone…. and maybe even progress to the word championship!

While there are prizes on offer for winning the national championships, pupils in teams that successfully complete the requirements of their entered class can also be accredited through registering for CREST Awards (Silver level), The Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme, and Industrial Cadets (Silver Award) for S1-3. F1 in Schools success is also a very useful experience to include in a UCAS personal statement!

Levenmouth Academy’s participation in F1 in Schools is being made possible with the support of:

  • Our partnership with ORE Catapult, who have supported us with initial financing for important resources, equipment and consumables
  • Mr David Dodds (Curriculum Leader, Inveralmond Community High School – the Scottish Manufacturing Centre for F1 in Schools) for helping set up our CNC router and advising our staff on its use
