BGE Home Economics in S3
The S3 Home Economics Food Courses will develop pupils’ practical cookery skills and their knowledge and understanding of ingredients as well as providing a set of foundation skills for those who wish to progress to professional hospitality courses or acquire skills for life, or the world of work. Pupils must have a keen interest in food and enjoy practical cooking.
These courses will also prepare learners for complex decisions required in learning, life and work. Learners completing the course will also focus on health, food, lifestyle and consumer issues and develop practical skills that are transferable to a range of contexts including employment.
S3 Stuart’s ‘Bake Off Challenge’
As part of the S3 Food course learners will take part in a 6 week challenge designing and developing their own Baked product to be judged by the managing director of Stuart’s bakers & Butchers of Buckhaven. S3 learners will work in pair to create their own original baked product while learning about the functional properties of ingredients as well as knowledge of baking recipes and basic sugar craft techniques. The winner will see their baked product on sale in Stuart’s for a short time with proceed going to a charity of their choice. Fantastic opportunity to learn about the sorts of skills required in the baking industry.

What SQA Qualifications can this lead to?
These courses continue into National 4/5 assessment in S4 and in S5/6 at National 5 level for the Hospitality and Fashion courses. Health and Food Technology courses progress from N4/5 level in S4 to Higher and Advanced Higher in S5/6.
Further Education options are also available at college such as courses in Hospitality and Professional Catering.
